Narrative Structure –
Opening; shots of the band and set up, starts in silence, once amp is plugged in music begins in sync.
Girl is sat getting ready by putting on make up, finishing touches to her hair and nails, her room is a mess, clothes everywhere there is a sense of anticipation as she leaves the house to go on a date. As she is leaving she takes a last look at her old boyfriend and pretends to think she has moved on. This fits in with Lobov’s theory, as the beginning gives the sense of equilibrium as the Girl seems happy and settled. She shuts the door and walks down the street where a car picks her up and pulls off, camera flowing them into the distance.
Switch to shots of the band playing n sync with the music and lyrics, the shots are a collection of individual band members and them as a group. This part of the music video moves away from the narrative and more to a performance based video.
Returning to the Girl as she is sat in a restaurant on another date, as she holds conversation she appears bored and lifeless, longing for her old boyfriend. The camera then pans around her to face shot after shot of different men she has dated in the time she has been split up with her ex-boyfriend. She gets up and leaves, leaving behind a reluctant male who doesn’t understand. This is the point of crisis in the music video as the Girl realises what she wants and the time she has wasted on other men. She is sat in a café, fumbling an old photo of her and her ex-boyfriend, thinking about what to do. This is approaching the point of denouement as the audience realise what she wants and the character acts up on her instinct.
The Girl walks along the street, hurried and rushed to find the studio where the band are playing, at the same time there are interlarding shots of the band playing and the tempo is increased fitting to the actions in the video. The Girl is bumped into, chatted up and friends call her up, she is anxious and determined not to miss the chance of meeting her ex. At this point the music video is approaching the final shots and as she steps through the studio door and into the practise room, the audience once again feel a sense of equilibrium as the ex-boyfriend and the Girl meet and embrace.
